History

Home of Huddersfield Pink Picnic since 1998.
The Huddersfield Pink Picnic began in 1986 with a group of friends deciding to organise an afternoon outing to the moors overlooking the scenic reservoir Binn Wood. It not only turned into an annual event but has also developed into something that the entire LGBT community can be proud of. By 1998 the event had grown to such a size (with over 1500 revellers) that a new location was needed to accommodate the massive turnout. Castle Hill, Huddersfield's most prominent landmark became the new location and has since become it's new home, in keeping with the 'day out in the countryside to picnic' tradition of the Pink Picnic. Please remember though, Castle Hill is a historic site that needs treating with the respect it deserves, we want to be able to come back every year. The event just keeps growing, in 2008 we saw a turnout of over 5,000 people and more are expected in the years to come.
2005 saw the birth of the PRIDE SISTERS 'We are what we are!' Claim the six volunteer members of the Pride Sisters. A collection of individuals from Huddersfield's gay community, each colourfully dressed to represent the six elements of the pride flag. They are out, loud and proud. Performing in the traditional style of the drag queen with false eyelashes a flutter, stockings, stilettos and sequins galore, they are here to entertain you with their glittering mime and dance routines. The ultimate in diversity, the Pride Sisters are always looking for new recruits, male, female, transgender, whatever your age, it doesn't matter, as long as you can learn to dance and lip sync.
New for 2008 was the Pride Art project, supported by Kirklees Arts in the Neighbourhood. Art work was created on the day and at following workshops using the pride flag as inspiration. The colours are symbolic, RED - life ORANGE - healing YELLOW - sunlight GREEN - nature BLUE - harmony VIOLET - spirit. The art work was on display at the 2009 Pink Picnic. In 2009 Kirklees Arts in the Neighbourhood again supported Pride Art. The Faceless Art Company ran a printing workshop at the Pink Picnic, photo's of which can be found in the gallery.
Last year's entertainments saw the mayoress open the event whilst DJ's Marky Mark and Miss Fish hosted stage stars Tina Cousins, E.N.V. Almost Pink, My Winehouse, The Declines, The Pride Sisters and Bears Aloud. The usual stalls and side entertainment were in abundance. Although it only stayed fine for the first few hours, the rain didn't dampen the party atmosphere.
